It is a women's place, west of Yuendumu, where ancestral women gathered digging sticks and travelled east through the desert. Watson painted this story again and again across her life, always finding new rhythm in it.

Here the land pulses in bands of yellow, red, pink and plum. The lines ripple sideways across the canvas like wind over spinifex, or like the tracks of many women walking in single file. A central seam runs top to bottom, dividing the country into two halves that answer each other. At the top and bottom sit paired roundels, concentric and nested, marking important sites where the women stopped.

Watson worked in a technique she called kuruwarri dragging, pulling loaded brushes across the surface so the colours blur and catch against one another. The effect is movement. Nothing in the picture stays still. Layers of ochre and gold push through underpaintings of deep red, and the whole surface shimmers like heat on sand.

Her palette is unmistakable. Hot pinks and yellows against burnt reds give the work a desert warmth that feels lived in rather than observed. The repetition of line is not decoration. It is the land itself, laid down stroke by stroke, and the memory of women moving through it.

A strong, fully resolved canvas from one of the most distinctive painters of the Warlpiri tradition.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0769/0993/6873/files/DDJW10001-Judy_Napangardi_Watson-2010-Mina_Mina-90x120-2_web2000.jpg?v=1791951123
