Katherine Marshall Nakamarra paints this ground not as her own birthplace but as her inheritance through her mother, Walangkura Napanangka, tracing the concentric sites and the paths that join them in the thick dotted fields associated with the Papunya Tula tradition.

Katherine Marshall Nakamarra is a Pintupi artist born at Papunya in 1968, the daughter of the celebrated painters Walangkura Napanangka and Johnny Yungut Tjupurrula. Her mother's sister was Pirrmangka Napanangka and her grandmother Inyuwa Nampitjinpa, and she learned to paint alongside her sisters Debra Young Nakamarra and Lorraine Yungut Nakamarra, taking up the brush in 1986. She paints the sacred women's sites of her mother's country west of Kintore - above all Tjintjintjin, the rockholes and soakages near Kiwirrkurra, and Muruntji - in thick fields of dotting that recall the Papunya Tula tradition but carry her own palette and way with the iconography. Concentric circles mark the ceremonial sites; the lines between them are the ancient paths her ancestors walked. She has shown at Japingka Gallery in Fremantle, including a solo exhibition in 2011, and her work is held in private collections in Australia and overseas.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0769/0993/6873/files/DYNG0016A-Katherine_And_Debra_Nakamarra-2018-Tjintjintjin_-_My_Mother_s_Country-122x91cm-square-web.jpg?v=1791027079
https://cag.art/products/katherine-marshall-nakamarra-debra-young-nakamarra-tjintjintjin-my-mother-s-country-2018-122x91cm
