The tropical storms of the Top End are part of her bones, and this monumental canvas pulls those memories onto linen at full scale.

Silver light spreads across the surface like a sky just before the strike. Fine dotwork shimmers in close patterned fields, holding the charged stillness of humid air. Then the lines arrive. Dark veins of lightning fork and branch across the work, splitting the sky into vast plates. Look closer and those same fractures read as cracked earth seen from above. King paints this doubling on purpose. The crack of lightning above mirrors the crack of dry ground below. Sky and Country answer each other.

This is a defining theme for the artist. Lightning storms over Darwin shaped her childhood imagination, and the series translates their force into something you can stand inside. The scale here matters. At nearly four metres wide, the work surrounds the viewer the way weather does.

King learned to paint at sixteen, working alongside her father William King Jungala. She combines fine traditional dotting with the unorthodox mark making he taught her. The result sits between tradition and her own contemporary language. Her wider practice, which she calls the Language of the Earth, treats every ripple, burn mark and fracture as the land speaking. Lightning is one of its loudest sentences.

The palette stays close to storm light. Pale silvers, soft greys, hints of blue and the dark graphite of the strikes themselves. Movement runs through the whole surface. You can almost hear the rain coming.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0769/0993/6873/files/DDSK08009-_Sarrita_King-2008-Lightning-190x400-1_web2000.jpg?v=1781348476
