Sollai Cartwright works the stone into a series of curling waves, each one turning back on itself like a breaking crest or the mane of a great cat at rest. The eye travels along the ridges. It finds a snail spiral at one end, a raised paw shape at the other, and a tall crown of curls rising from the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere is no strict figure to name here. The lion is felt rather than shown. Cartwright leaves you to move between readings, from ocean swell to sleeping animal to baroque flourish, and the marble accepts all of them. The polished surface catches light along every crest and lets shadow pool inside the hollows. Fine grey veining runs through the white like drifting weather.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe scale is generous. At close to two metres across, the piece has the presence of a reclining body, low and long, settled into its plinth. Yet the carving feels weightless. Cartwright has cut deep undercuts and open windows through the stone, so light passes through the form and softens its mass. What could have been monumental becomes buoyant.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCartwright belongs to a contemporary sculptural tradition that prizes direct carving and a long conversation with classical material. \u003cem\u003eResting Lion\u003c\/em\u003e sits inside that lineage while looking entirely of its own moment. It rewards slow looking. Walk around it and the animal appears, then dissolves back into water, then returns.
