Musonga Mbogo
Tanzanian and Zimbabwean heritage · Canberra, ACT · b. 1999
Musonga Mbogo is a self-taught neo-expressionist painter based on Ngunnawal and Ngambri land in Canberra. Born in Singapore in 1999 to a Tanzanian father and a Zimbabwean mother, he draws on that heritage and on his Australian upbringing to create vibrant, emotionally resonant works exploring identity, diaspora and cultural hybridity. His bold use of colour, layered textures and spontaneous brushwork reflect both the playful and the profound aspects of life.
Deeply influenced by music, he often weaves song lyrics and rhythms into his work, with a creative process driven by intuition and emotion, and his chosen mediums of spray paint, acrylic and oil pastel mirror the balance of softness and edge that characterises his practice. He examines complex questions of ethnicity, hybrid identity and globalisation, and the narratives he presents are at once ubiquitous and singular: audiences are invited to immerse themselves in his world and imagine themselves as characters in the stories.
He has produced three solo exhibitions, with the Melbourne Fashion Festival, Hake House of Art and Nishi Gallery, and has recently completed an international residency in Italy. His collaborations include the Sydney Theatre Company, Triple J, Nike, Ace Hotel Sydney and The Canberra Hospital, and he is represented by Hake House of Art in New South Wales and Fenton & Fenton in Victoria. He was awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 2025 to develop community pathways for multicultural visual artists in Australia, and is the founder of Art Clubs, monthly community gatherings for artists from diverse backgrounds.
With each canvas he invites viewers into stories that blend the global with the personal, visual diaries of a third culture identity shaped by movement, memory and meaning.
