Rowdy Warren throws the garden at the canvas. Wild flowers erupt across a silvered ground, each bloom a burst of pale blue, white and soft ochre spun out from an inky core. The petals feel spun rather than painted, flicked into being with a loaded brush and a confident wrist.
Look closely and you can read the gesture. Ribbons of black lash between the blossoms like stems caught in a gust. Yellow specks land like pollen. Cobalt drips run down the surface where gravity took over. The whole field hums with movement, as if the bouquet has been shaken loose from its vase and suspended mid air.
Warren works in a contemporary pop idiom, and this piece carries the energy of that tradition. There are echoes of action painting in the drip work, but the subject stays generous and legible. Flowers. Dozens of them. Some fully open, some just beginning to unfurl, some little more than a bright collision at the tip of a stem.
The palette is deliberately cool. Grey wash, black gesture, white body, with those small warm accents of gold acting as sparks. Against the tall vertical format the arrangement reads like a rising bloom, wider through the middle, tapering at the base where the paint pools and runs. It is a work that rewards standing back, then stepping in close to catch the flick of each individual petal.
Wild Flowers is exuberant without being loud. A joyful piece of gestural abstraction dressed as a bouquet.
