Three blooms hang suspended against a wash of sunlit yellow. Each flower is a burst of silver and pewter paint, flung and shaped into petals that seem to still be moving. The centres glow with small ochre eyes. Below them, black tendrils drip and trail toward the base of the canvas like stems caught in a sudden downpour.
Rowdy Warren works in a contemporary pop idiom, and Wildflowers shows his fondness for gesture and controlled chaos. The paint has been poured, tilted and spun. What could have been mess becomes botany. You can read the trio as three friends standing in a field, or three specimens pinned to a wall of gold. Either way, they carry a lightness that belies the drama of their making.
The yellow ground does a lot of the emotional work here. It is warm, almost hot, and it throws the metallic silver of the petals into sharp relief. Small flecks of green and orange sit in the wet edges, hints of a garden pushing through. The black splatter that runs across the lower half grounds the composition and gives the flowers somewhere to belong.
There is a quiet wit in Warren's approach. He treats the accident of dripped paint as if it were the whole point, then coaxes it into something recognisable and tender. Wildflowers rewards a long look. Step closer and the petals dissolve into pure paint. Step back and the bouquet returns, standing tall against all that yellow light.
