Rowdy Warren throws the garden at the canvas. Wildflowers blooms across a two metre square in salmon pinks, warm corals and a drift of sage along the upper edge. The ground glows like late afternoon light on a wall.
Daisies scatter across the surface in silvery whites. Each head is a burst of flicked paint, petals thrown outward from a soft ochre centre. Some sit heavy and full. Others are barely there, a quick splash caught mid air. Thin black lines whip between them like stems in a breeze.
Warren works in a flung, gestural language that owes something to action painting and something to pop. The flowers read as cheerful and immediate. Look closer and the surface becomes a weather system of drips, teal flecks, mustard yellows and inky black spatter. Nothing is laboured. Every mark had to land on the first try.
There is real joy in the restraint of the palette. The coral background keeps the whole field warm and domestic, almost wallpaper like, while the chaos of the flung paint pulls it somewhere wilder. It feels like a bunch of wildflowers remembered rather than observed. The impression of a meadow rather than its map.
Hung at this scale, the work takes over a room. Step back and the daisies organise themselves into a loose bouquet. Step close and it dissolves into pure movement, paint doing what paint does when the artist trusts it. A generous, high energy piece from a painter who clearly loves the material.
