Rowdy Warren throws the garden onto the canvas. Pale blue washes the background like a wide spring sky. Across it, flowers burst open in flicks and splatters of white, teal and ribboned colour. Each bloom has a quiet centre and a wild halo of thrown paint.
The scale is generous. Standing in front of the work, the wildflowers feel life sized, nodding at head height and underfoot. Lines of pink, cobalt and ochre trail between them like stems caught in a breeze. Small drips settle at the base of the canvas, the way petals fall onto grass.
Warren works in a pop and contemporary idiom. There is a clear debt to gestural painting here, the kind where the artist's arm is part of the picture. Yet the subject stays tender. These are not abstract marks for their own sake. They are daisies, paper flowers, the scrubby blooms that appear after rain.
Wildflowers celebrates that fleeting season when colour returns to the landscape. The palette leans cool and fresh, with hot pinks and reds acting like sudden accents in the field. White dominates, giving the whole surface a sunlit quality.
It is a joyful, physical painting. The energy of the throw is preserved in every drip and spatter. Hung in a large room, the work reads as a window into a meadow. Up close, it becomes a record of movement, of the artist dancing paint across the canvas. A statement piece built from the smallest, most delicate subject.
