Rowdy Warren throws paint like he is throwing weather. Wildflowers is a storm of blooms across a stormy sky, with each flower built from a flung centre and whipping arcs of colour. Look closely and you see heads, stems, petals pulled into motion. Step back and a meadow emerges, caught mid gust.
The ground shifts from pewter grey at the top to a shallow pool of turquoise at the base. That lower band reads like water, or sky flipped upside down, giving the flowers somewhere to lean. Warm peach washes bleed through on the right. The effect is weather moving across a paddock.
Warren works in a contemporary pop register. He loves high contrast, strong gesture, and the kind of colour that pings off a wall from across a room. There are clear echoes of mid century action painting here, but the subject is unmistakably Australian. These are the hardy wildflowers that erupt after rain, scribbled with black seed heads and tangled stalks.
Each bloom carries its own palette. One burns cadmium yellow and orange. Another leans into magenta and teal. A few hold back in soft dove and bone, letting the louder flowers do the shouting. The composition reads as a crowd, not a pattern.
At this scale the work behaves like a window. Stand near it and the splatters become individual decisions, little flicks of the wrist. Walk away and the field closes up into one living thing. It is a joyful, slightly feral painting, and a strong anchor piece for a large wall.
