Seen from above, a shoreline meets open water. The upper half carries the pale turquoise of shallow sea washing against sand. The lower half deepens into a steady marine blue, the kind you find further out where the floor drops away.
Sarrita King builds the whole surface from fine white dots. Thousands of them. Up close they read as foam and ripple. Step back and they resolve into the pull of a tide, the swell of water moving in long parallel lines toward the beach.
This is part of her ongoing attention to the Language of the Earth. She treats the land and sea as a surface that speaks through pattern. Every crack, dune, current and shoreline has its own grammar. Her job is to translate.
Growing up in Darwin shaped this way of looking. The tropical north gave her weather at full volume and country best understood from the air. You can feel that aerial reading here. The horizon line is not sky meeting land. It is the edge where sand gives way to deeper water, mapped as if from a low plane.
King learned her craft alongside her father, the late William King Jungala, and her sister Tarisse. She works independently from Darwin on Larrakia Country, carrying forward Gurindji and Waanyi connections through a contemporary hand. The dotting technique is traditional. The vantage point and the quiet, almost photographic palette are her own.
Hung on a wall, the piece behaves like weather. It rewards slow looking. The longer you stand with it, the more the water seems to move.
