Seen from above, the land rolls open under a star drenched sky. Sarrita King works the surface in thousands of fine dots, each one placed to catch the light and suggest movement. The upper band reads as atmosphere, deep indigo pricked with white, while the lower slopes carry the cooler teal of weathered earth or shallow water.
King grew up in Darwin, surrounded by the tropical weather and open country that still drives her work. Her Earth Elements paintings take an aerial view of the continent. Sand dunes, rock shelves and dried waterways are reduced to their essential rhythms. You can feel the wind that shaped these ridges. The soft diagonal crests suggest the slow drift of sand across the land.
She paints with a combination of traditional dotting and methods passed down from her late father, William King Jungala. The result is a surface that shifts as you move around it. Look closely and the dots gather into currents. Step back and the whole canvas breathes.
For King, the earth has its own language. Every crack, ripple and ridge is a form of speech. Here, that language is quiet and expansive. A horizon separates sky from ground, yet both are made of the same restless marks. It is a reminder that weather, water and land are one continuous system, read from the air by someone who knows the Country below.
A contemplative work for a space that needs stillness and depth. The palette will sit beautifully against pale timber, soft white walls, or deeper charcoal interiors where the dotwork can glow.
