Across a field of luminous olive and ochre, fine pale lines radiate outward from quiet centres, splintering and rejoining like fractures racing through stone. This is Lightning as Sarrita King remembers it — not the singular bolt, but the entire sky alive, electricity branching across the tropical north in the brief, breathless seconds before thunder arrives.

King grew up in Darwin, where the build season delivers some of the most spectacular electrical storms on earth. Those nights — the air thick and metallic, the horizon strobing white — became the foundation of her practice. Here she translates that memory into something closer to topography than weather. The radiating lines suggest both forks of lightning splitting the sky and the cracked, parched earth that mirrors them below. The resemblance is intentional: in her vision, the sky writes onto the land, and the land remembers.

The palette holds the strange green-gold light that descends just before a storm breaks, when the atmosphere itself seems to glow from within. Concentric points anchor the composition like the eyes of the storm, each one sending its filaments outward to meet, overlap and dissolve into the next. There is intensity here, but also a quiet lyricism — what King describes as the subtle beauty between dramatic strikes, where elements twist gracefully through chaos.

A proud Gurindji Waanyi woman and daughter of the late William King Jungala, Sarrita carries forward an inheritance of storytelling through paint. She combines fine traditional dotting with unorthodox techniques learned from her father, building surfaces that feel simultaneously ancient and immediate. Her Lightning works belong to a broader project she calls the Language of the Earth — the idea that every crack, ripple and burn mark across Country is the land speaking, and that the artist's task is simply to translate. In this canvas, the earth and the sky speak the same word.
