Ngurra means home, or Country. Sarrita King paints the land from above. Here the surface reads like sun warmed earth seen from the air, the pale ochres and apricot tones broken by fine networks of white line work.

Concentric rings radiate out from quiet centres, each one a gathering point. They could be the rings of an ancient tree, the ripple of a stone dropped into a waterhole, or the way wind carves sand into circles around a still place. Around them, hairline cracks travel across the canvas, mapping the way earth splits and settles after heat and rain.

King grew up in Darwin and learned to read weather and Country from her father, the late William King Jungala. His Gurindji people led the Wave Hill Walk Off, and that lineage of holding ground sits behind every work she makes. She often speaks of the earth having its own visual language. Paintings like this one are her translation.

The fine dotted lines are laid down with patience. They build a topographic feeling, as though you are flying low over a vast plain at the end of the day. The warm coral and salmon tones carry the heat of the tropical north. White picks out the bones of the landscape underneath.

There is a quiet rhythm to the surface. Look longer and the centres begin to pulse, the cracks begin to flow, the ground seems to breathe. Ngurra is a meditation on belonging, painted by an artist who carries her father's stories forward into her own generation.
