A white sculptural form rises from its base in looping curves and open windows. The surface is smooth, almost liquid, catching the light along each ridge. Two apertures pierce the centre. They pull the eye through the stone and out the other side.
Sollai Cartwright works in a contemporary abstract idiom. The title Boogie Boogie hints at rhythm, at bodies leaning into a beat. You can read the piece that way. Two figures caught mid movement, arms lifted, hips swung. Or you can let it stay pure form. Curves answering curves, a conversation between mass and void.
What holds attention is the balance. The base narrows to a small footprint. Above it the sculpture opens out, reaches up, tilts and swells. There is weight here, but the work feels buoyant. The carved openings do most of that lifting. They turn a solid block into something that breathes.
Cartwright leaves the finish soft rather than polished to a shine. Faint tonal shifts run through the surface. Shadows pool in the hollows. The whole piece changes as you walk around it. From one angle it reads as a single flame. From another, as two dancers locked in a slow spin.
It is a confident, joyful object. Playful in its title, serious in its craft. A work that rewards slow looking and invites a hand to trace its curves, even if the gallery would rather you didn't.
