A sinuous red-ochre serpent winds the full length of this tall, narrow panel, its body curling through a dense field of dotted country. The carpet snake, a creature of waterholes, rocky crevices and warm sand moves here as both animal and ancestor, its passage shaping the land it travels through. Dark, mottled markings along its spine echo the patterning of the living reptile, while its slow, deliberate curves suggest the unhurried logic of a being that knows every contour of its territory.
Around the serpent, the surface pulses with fine stippled dotwork in dusky rose, cream, charcoal and pale gold. Soft cloud-like forms drift across the composition, suggesting shifting ground, seasonal change, or the layered terrain seen from above. Star-burst flowers in pale ochre anchor the corners — bright punctuations that lift the eye and frame the snake's journey from the top of the panel to the curling flick of its tail at the base.
Carpet Snake Dreaming belongs to a body of stories that map ancestral movement across the central desert, where a single travelling being can connect distant sites, soakages and family country. The vertical format intensifies this sense of journey: the viewer reads the work from top to bottom much as one might trace a track across country, following the snake's deliberate descent through a landscape thick with detail.
The painting carries the unmistakable visual language of Western Desert practice, the rhythmic dotting, the aerial perspective, the balance of figure and field — handled with confidence and a strong painterly hand. The serpent's warm red body against the cooler dotted ground creates a quiet drama, a single ancestral presence moving through a world that is dense, populated and alive. It is a work that rewards slow looking, each cluster of dots adding to the hum of country the snake inhabits.
